Library Day in the Life–Wednesday

I had a busy day today and didn’t get much done. How is this possible? Let’s see…

8:30-10:30 am — Shaping Reference discussion. The reference departments got together and talked about where we want our reference services to go. What are we doing? Is it working? What can we do better? And this is assuming no growth–we have to make do with what we have.

Ideas included merging service points, making the reference desk more visible, streamlining digital reference (we provide reference services in a lot of different ways–they don’t always sync well), embedded librarians/marketing (librarian contact info on syllabi, course management system, etc), going where the students are…

Very interesting discussion. There will be a followup sometime re: whether and how we want to implement any of these ideas.

10:30 — prep for Librarian Association at the University of California, Irvine (LAUC-I) Executive Board meeting. As ALC chair, I am on it.

11-12 pm — LAUC-I Exec Bd

12-1 pm — Catch up with email. Send reminder of Law Librarian panel for tomorrow. Schedule video conferencing equipment since some staff will be at the medical library (in a different town).  Send email to committee telling them that we have more $$  for refreshments for the program (yay!) Eat lunch. Prep for next meeting.

1-2 p–Collections Coordinating Committee (CCC) meeting. I am member at large this year. Discussed pilot for new weeding procedures, graphs to show collections fund expenditures, etc. Ended early (meeting was scheduled to go until 4 pm).

2 pm — More catch up in office.

3 pm–Cover desk shift for colleague who is out sick. Answer two questions (where is the stapler?)

4 pm–Following up on idea from this morning’s discussion, I look up the class schedules for my departments and plot them in Google Calendar. I wanted to see if there were blank spots that might work well for office hours. Since my departments are language departments, half the day is filled up with intro language classes taught by grad students. The other half of the day is classes for upper level undergrads and grad students. Hmm…Office hours would have to be either at the crack of dawn or very late afternoon. Will have to think about it.

5:45 pm — All done at work and off to yoga!
